About the Research

As a department of the University of Oxford, Oxford University Press places great importance on developing teaching and learning resources that draw on current education research, the expectations of teachers and the needs of students. As part of the Oxford Atlas Project we also believed it to be important to seek the input and reflections of Australian teachers and, in particular, teachers of Geography. This research highlights three common challenges students at all levels face in learning to read and interpret maps: clarity, colour and scale. The Oxford Atlas Project has responded to this research by developing a series of education atlases that address these concerns in a manner that is age-appropriate and sensitive to the needs of Australian students.

The results of this research have been summarised in two key documents: ‘Navigating cartography’, a summary of recent local and international research into cartographic literacy in children, and ‘Cartography navigated’, a summary of our research into atlas use and cartographic literacy in Australian schools.
